Influence of competition on size, brood production and sex ratio in spruce beetles (Col.: Scolytidae)

In spruce beetles, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, the effects of intraspecific competition on reproductive biology were studied in the laboratory at constant temperature. The factors were: egg gallery length, brood production per female, adult size in the broods, and sex ratio of the young spruce beetles, using egg gallery spacings of 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 per 30 cm. All variables except sex ratio were significantly and inversely related to gallery spacing. The results indicate that density-dependent compensatory processes operate in spruce beetle populations during gallery construction and brood development.References
